The Subtext Studio is a gender-neutral clothing brand from Salford, Greater Manchester. We make quiet statement tees for queer, trans, non-binary and lesbian people, and for anyone who has ever had to explain who they are. Our tagline is worn out loud.
Why “subtext”
Most of us learned to speak in subtext first. You check the room before you say “my partner”. You let “ma’am” slide because correcting it costs more than it’s worth. You do the quiet maths of safety a dozen times a day.
Our designs put that subtext on the outside. Small type, tonal prints, nothing loud for the sake of it. The kind of tee that the right people read straight away, and everyone else just sees a good t-shirt.
